How much would it cost for a custom paint job on a car?

Question: How much would it cost for a custom paint job on a car?

(Posted by: JoshCube on 2008-09-20 10:51:26)

I own a 1995 Dodge Neon, I was wondering how much an auto paint place would charge me for a custom paint job. Like for example, if I want the entire car painted green with some pictures on it. I have a feeling it's really expensive since I rarely see people driving around with custom paint jobs. Anyone know how much they are? I heard they were like $2, 000 on up. Thanks.

Go to your local body shop and ask them to refer you somewhere. MACO may be an option if they have that in your area.

$2,000 and up is correct...I know a guy who just got an $8,000 Viper Blue paint job. It costs so much because it is not easy, it can take months to repaint a car. In my opinion, if your a real car enthusiast than just a buy a car the color you want and do your best to keep it nice and then spend that $2000 to $8000 on performance instead of a color change.

That really depends on how fancy you get and the overall quality of the job. It could cost anywhere from $2k like you were told to over $10k. Your best bet would be to go to the shops, tell them what you'd want and get a quote. Whatever you get, it won't be cheap. If the pictures you want can be taken care of with pre-made graphics or vinyls, that could decrease the price. However, if what you are looking for is airbrushed or pin-striping, it will defiantly cost you. Then you get into the base coat. If you want metal flake, candies, or clear coat, your price Will go up more again. The price will also increase if you want some kind of custom color other than what they have in stock, color shift or metallic.

You are asking a very broad question. No offense, but it is like asking "how long is a string? " It all depends. What sort of shape is your current paint job in? Did you desire a two stage or three stage green color for the main color. Did you want a metallic or pearl? Maybe candy apple? What "pictures " do you have in mind? With "art work " the price starts going out of control. Really depends on the time your air-brush artist needs to spend on your project. How about extra coats of clear? Maybe color sanding and polishing to make it look a mile deep? Do you want the door jams, inside the trunk and engine openings matched to the outside color? There are many questions to be answered by you. In most of the shops that I am familiar with, $2000 will get you a nice, exterior only, same color as stock, paint job.You would benefit by sitting down with your self and deciding exactly what you want. Next you will need to find a reputable shop that is capable and willing to perform the work you desire. This is the most important part! You will want to look at examples of the work the shop has done. If possible talk to others who have had custom work done at your prospective shop. Don't settle for anything but the best you can find. If not, you will be unhappy right up to the point where you sell your green Neon, for less than it is worth. I hope this info is helpful. Happy Motoring!
